One of my favorite aspects of shellac is its quick drying time of about ten minutes. Interestingly, it is derived from insects, which may sound unappealing to some. However, it is likely a healthier option compared to the dust generated by polyurethane. Ultimately, it doesn't matter much since the dust from MDF can be even more harmful.

While Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) is straightforward to apply, I haven't found it to be particularly waterproof. However, I have not tested it on MDF specifically.
Medium Density Fiberboard, commonly referred to as MDF, is a type of wood fiberboard that consists of wood fibers.
For more insights, please check mdf waterproof.
The surface of MDF is typically smooth and uniform. Unlike solid wood, MDF does not feature any natural veining.
MDF panels are constructed from wood sourced from various species, including hardwoods and softwoods, which are reduced to small chips. The finest and coarsest fibers are removed, leaving only the appropriate wood fibers. These fibers are then bonded together using resins, applying heat and pressure in the process.
Certain wood species used for manufacturing MDF panels may not withstand external elements effectively. To enhance the medium's resistance to mold, fungi, or moisture, chemical additives can be incorporated into the mix.
