I'm constantly considering the preparation needed to heat a 60x60 hangar. Currently, we are updating our old 50x35 version. The heater installation is expected to cost around $4,000 and should be completed within two weeks. For a hangar of this size, I've noticed that two heaters on opposite ends are often used. Therefore, it's likely that we'll need between $8,000 to $10,000 just for heating. Our 50-foot back wall, with a height of 14 feet, will require approximately 36 galvanized 2x6 studs at $15 each. Including insulation and fire-rated 5/8 sheetrock, just constructing one wall could easily surpass that estimate, not to mention the wiring. So, estimating about $3,000 per wall for three walls on the 60x60 hangar leads us close to another $10,000 or perhaps $12,000 for the smaller side walls near the larger door. The ceiling is also a significant factor; maximum insulation is necessary there, ideally R50 BIB. While I’m unsure of an exact figure, I can hardly envision the combined costs of framing, insulation, and metal panels being less than about another $15,000. Given our winter conditions, I would prefer a 1,000-gallon propane tank since 500-gallon tanks would require frequent refills. This leads to an additional estimate of around $600 for the tank delivery, trenching work for the piping, and installing a 3 psi regulator on the exterior wall. In total, I’m anticipating a minimum of around $40,000 to efficiently heat that area, especially since we are handling the framing, insulation, and sheetrock ourselves, so labor costs are not included in my estimate.
This all assumes the hangar door was procured previously and already insulated.
I may have overlooked something, but I haven't seen many 60x60 hangars with a height of just 14 feet. It seems prevalent for them to have at least 16-foot walls. Thus, this will certainly affect all other estimates too.
I'm also curious if wood trusses could span 60 feet, or if I-beams are necessary for that much space.
