Pouches: What You Should Know | Associated Labels

Whether stand up or flat bags, pouches have become a primary packaging choice for flexible packaging. Not only do they offer an opportunity for 360-degree branding with superior finishing options, but they can also keep your product intact with high barrier properties. So, when creating a pouch, where should you begin?

HaiPak supply professional and honest service.

Here are a few questions to use as starting points when creating a new pouch:

What product is your pouch going to be holding?

It's important to know what product will be going into your pouch for many reasons:

  • Dimensions: The pouch dimensions should be relative to the product inside, as you don’t want massively oversized packaging. Not only is wasteful packaging a big consumer frustration, but it’s also an unnecessary increase in cost for your company.
  • Structure: Depending on what you’re packaging, you may be looking for a stand-up pouch or a flat bag, and many different gusset types. For example, grains are typically packaged in stand-up pouches. This makes the packaging more convenient for customer storage at home. If you’re unsure about what would be the best structure for your product, we have in-house experts who can provide consultation.
  • Barrier Requirements: Whether you're packaging a food product or something sensitive to light, the barrier properties of the pouch material need to be adjusted to ensure your product is properly protected.

What add-ons are you looking for?

Pouches can offer a range of superior finishes and add-ons. Some of these include tear notches, rounded corners, hang holes, and many zipper options, all of which should be confirmed at the beginning of the design process.

How advanced is your design?

If you have an intricate design or your pouches will be used for products with many scents or variations, your project might be better suited to be printed digitally. At Associated, we can print both digitally and with flexographic printing; you can find out more here.

3 Questions to Ask Spout Pouch Suppliers Before You Commit

1. How does your packaging help my margins?

Flexible packaging costs less than jugs, bottles, or cans. Many domestic flexible packaging suppliers, however, are unable to deliver orders with small minimums at a reasonable price. At the same time, you might not be ready to commit to 50,000 units on a new packaging type right out of the gate.

What those companies won’t tell you is that some suppliers out there can handle small runs for trial orders, new flavors, and regional test packaging place orders as low as 5,000 pieces with the same print and material quality as those large domestic orders — and at an even lower price point. We know because we’re one of them.

Our factories in the US and overseas are ISO and ISO certified and print in up to 12 colors with very small minimums that are almost impossible to find in the states. We’ll also hold your packaging in stock for immediate release as needed. Go ahead and run down your inventory to zero and call for a fresh shipment, on-demand. The right partnership can not only protect your margins, but expand them.

2. How will your pouches step up the game for my product?

It helps to go into the conversation with a basic understanding of your pouch options. There are a ton of innovative designs that bring a unique convenience and efficiency to foods, chemicals, dry goods, liquids, small quantities, large quantities, and more. A knowledgeable and resourceful supplier can deliver the optimal spout pouch for your product and your customer.

You’ll want to see if your spout pouch suppliers can show you samples of styles like:

  • Stand Up Pouches: A flat-bottomed stand up pouch is the best way to replicate the role of a rigid container on the shelf while saving space, weight, money, and time — and you’re getting edge-to-edge real estate for brightly colored and attractive printed branding!

  • Gussetted Pouches: Side gussets can give your flat-bottomed spout pouch a squarer, more defined shape. They’re great for products that need to maintain freshness for a longer time, and can even include air valves that let the air out, but not in — perfect for coffee grounds and other products where it helps to give the customer a chance to experience the aroma of the product before they buy.

  • Spouted Pillow Pouches: Especially on products that come in small quantities, a pillow pouch with a spout is essentially a convenient handheld squeeze tube. These are great for travel sizes.

  • Spray Nozzle Pouches: Spout pouches are excellent for household cleaning products like window cleaner and disinfectants when fitted with a spray nozzle in place of a simple screw cap spout.

  • Spigot Pouches: Wine or beer in a bag? Put a spigot-style spout on the bottom of the container rather than the top, and dispense like you would with a beer tap or boxed wine.

  • Pump Top Pouches: Perfect for liquid soaps, hand sanitizer, condiments, and more.

  • Handles or Hang Tabs: An attached plastic handle makes a bigger pouch (think laundry detergent) easier to hold, carry, and pour, replicating the convenience of a jug handle without the bulky rigid container.

  • Spout Pouches With a Built-in Straw: Capri Sun and other juice pouches often come with a disposable straw taped to the side. These get lost and cause frustration and spills as people try to poke them into the pouch. Innovative new designs include a built-in extendable straw right inside the spout. Ask us for samples and check them out!

3. Can I count on you to deliver on time?

The domestic supply chain is a mess right now. Many overseas suppliers are faring no better, with long lead times to get on the boat and across the water. Whichever spout pouch suppliers earn your business, they’ll need to do more than solve for price per unit and style options. We’ve seen something as seemingly trivial as caps for spice bottles backed up for 8 months or more, and brands just don’t know what else to do.

You’ll want a partner who knows they can deliver — fast. Stand Up Pouches offers lead times as few as 2 days for some of our on-hand flexible packaging products. We leverage a diverse global network with factories and warehouses both stateside and overseas to source your packaging reliably and quickly. Most domestic suppliers don’t know how to do what we do, but we’ve got decades of industry experience and the boots on the ground around the globe to make things happen.
