Years ago, I was a theatrical makeup artist. I loved my tackle box full of products, but mostly I lived for the brushes. During those years, makeup counters had a mediocre selection at best, so I bought many of my brushes at art and hardware stores. I trimmed and shaped them to fit my needs.

Today, it seems as if there are more makeup brushes available than we can figure out what to do with. So I decided to track down a few experts to help navigate the options and learn how to use and take care of them.

What are the most important brushes for a novice?
While brush choice can be a very personal thing, I think there are a few key brushes that someone just starting out could really use:
If your everyday makeup routine includes complexion products, then invest in quality foundation, concealer, and powder brushes because you want those brushes to last and give you the best result.

I first determine the softness of the bristles. I often run the brush over the back of my hand to get an understanding of what it might feel like on the face. I find the softer the bristle, the softer the blend.
I then look to the durability of the handle. The construction of the brush is just as important as the fibers used. High quality brushes are usually hand tied and secured to the handle with a metal ferrule, which prevents shedding and ensures the longevity of your brushes.

Are natural or synthetic bristles the better buy?
I thoroughly enjoy both and often use both to get different results.
Natural bristles are great for powders usually because the texture of the bristles grabs it and holds it there until applied. Synthetic bristles are great for liquids and creams because the fibers are non-porous.
What are the best practices for cleaning brushes?
I suggest cleaning your brushes once a week with a brush cleanser. I love the Sephora Collection Solid Brush Cleaner ($14), because it gives them a great deep clean while leaving them hydrated and plush when they dry.
One key tip when cleaning your brushes is to lay your brushes down flat to dry, this prevents water from leaking into the ferrule and loosening the glue holding the bristles, which can cause shedding.
What is the difference between brushes in the expensive, moderate and inexpensive price ranges and what do we really need?
Buying a quality brush is a great investment because they will last you a long time if you take care of them. Investing in professional grade brushes will help achieve a more refined application because of the high quality materials used to create them.
The downside of buying cheaper brushes are shedding and irritation because of the course texture of the bristles that can scratch the delicate skin of the face and eyes. Cheaper brushes also deteriorate faster.

What is better for foundation, a foundation brush or a sponge applicator?
I have found that a general rule of thumb would be to match the tool to your skin type and desired finish.
During the winter when your skin tends to be a little dryer, applying foundation with a wet sponge can help to minimize texture and add moisture to your skin.
During the warmer months, I find that foundation brushes help foundation and tinted moisturizer set a bit faster when skin tends to be dewy or oily.
I've seen foundation brushes in many shapes and sizes from flat to round and dense, why the differences, which is better?
There are foundation brushes in all sizes, shapes and forms and each one serves a unique purpose. I say, the more options the better! I have found that finding the right tool is mostly about what works best for you and your skin type.
