When Do You Need To Replace Your Chrome Carbide Plate?

In abrasion applications, Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) Plate lasts many times longer than AR400 type heat treated alloy steel wear plates.  CCO was developed to combat abrasive wear from sliding abrasive materials.  While they do last many times longer than heat treated alloy steels, they do not last forever.

If you are considering using CCO plates in your equipment, or are a fairly new user; you may wonder what to look for to determine when you need to replace your plates.

Q:

HOW CAN YOU TELL WHEN YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR CCO PLATE?

A:

WHEN YOU NO LONGER SEE THE WELD BEADS AS SHOWN BELOW, IT IS TIME TO REPLACE THE CCO WEAR PLATES. 

This competitor’s clad plate was no match for the continual focused landing of the abrasive rocks coming down the discharge chute. When the mild steel base plate is exposed, the mild steel wears away rapidly.
You can clearly see where the impact area and chute base plate are totally gone. You are now wearing away the equipment structure.
When you see the worn Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) looking dark gray instead of the shiny chrome appearance, it means you have worn through the overlay, into the mild steel base plate. It needs to be replaced quickly or you will soon damage your equipment’s structural components. It gets substantially more expensive to fix after that point.

It is important to note…
Chrome Carbide Overlay cannot be cut with an oxy-fuel torch.
It must be cut by plasma, water jet, wire EDM (electrical discharge machining) or air-arc gouging.

What Equipment Should Be Used For The Most Accurate Countersunk Bolt Holes?

NOTE: Always plasma cut CCO plate from the mild steel side.

Here is what you can expect when installing the JADCO CHROMEWELD ™ CCO plates.
Notice the flat head bolts fit flush or slightly below the surface, so it does not impede the material flow. Notice the JADCO plasma cut countersink. Featuring a smooth taper the proper size for your specific fastener.

In the photo below, a competitor allocates shop personnel up to one hour to create a countersunk hole by hand with Air-Arc. Making their products more expensive.  Don’t take chances, go with Chromeweld ™ for accurate hole locations, in longer lasting Chrome Carbide Overlay plate.

Most competitors still make counter sunk holes with hand held air arc. As you can see, they are difficult to control resulting in a poor fit. This allows the plates to loosen in use. Another issue is the bevel is often too wide; exposing the mild steel base plate under the overlay.  When the mild steel rapidly wears away from below, it allows the CCO to fall away as it no longer has any structural support.
